We left the site at Inzell and drove west for about an hour. The car park just above Tatzelwurm can be used as an overnight parking spot and only costs 3 euros for 24 hours. However as we arrived a German was just leaving and gave us his ticket so we didn't have to pay anything.
We started walking up towards the summit of Brünnstein. First it was on easy tracks, then steeper up through the forest. As we got higher the views got better and the path got more precarious.
At the Brünnsteinhaus hut you're supposed to be able to see 400 peaks, mostly in Austria, but visibility wasn't really good enough.
As we approached the summit there was a very steep bit of scrambling with a wire rope to assist. Finally we got to the tiny chapel at the peak (1619m). It was a relief to get there.
The weather had closed in so we didn't linger at the top. However after the initial scramble descent, the rest of the way down was much easier, though longer than the ascent.
We had to negotiate our way past a bunch of frisky cows that took an interest in Oscar, and freaked him out a bit.
It was quite late by the time we got back to the van. The walk was a total of 15.5km with 938m of ascent.
We stayed in the car park overnight, as did a few other vans. We had walnut and blue cheese salad for dinner.
