Seville - Day 6

We had now pre-booked tickets for the cathedral, so we spent another day in Seville. We caught the Metro and then started a walking tour that we'd downloaded. It was interesting wandering round the old streets.

Our cathedral tickets also included entry to the El Salvador church, so we had a look round it. Seville has a famous Semana Santa (Holy Week) procession at Easter, and all the churches prepare huge pasos (floats) decorated in silver and gold which are carried by men through the streets. At the moment they're inside the churches being prepared.

We then went to an attraction known as the Setas de Sevilla (mushrooms of Seville). This is a huge wooden structure which takes up a whole square, which you can pay to walk round, with great views over the city.

In the basement below the mushrooms is an archaeological dig site exposing the Roman ruins that were under the square, discovered during the construction.

After this we went to an authentic Spanish backstreet café for some churros and chocolate.

We did some more walking round the city, and saw more churches, a union protest outside the town hall and some nice plazas.

We had a light lunch near the cathedral, some iberico ham, manchego cheese and potato tortilla.

We then went into the cathedral, starting with going up the Giralda tower to the top with great views over the city again. The tower has sloping ramps up rather than steps, apparently so that horses could get up, though I don't know why they'd want to.

It was very busy at the top, you had to queue up to see out anywhere.

We then had a look round the huge cathedral, apparently the third largest in Europe. Supposedly Christopher Columbus's body is in the casket.

After the cathedral we had another walk in the park, and managed to get a picture of one of the many parakeets that are everywhere in the trees around the city.

We bought a nice ice cream, before catching the Metro back to Mairena. We had a beer in the sunshine at our local Bodega San Rafael.

Later for dinner we had pasta with pancetta, tomatoes, onions and garlic.
