In the morning we went to the tourist information office in town and picked up the routes of a couple of walks in the area.
We decided to go on one that starts at the river next to our campervan. It first went along an old road below the vineyard.
It then wound its way up through forest paths to Hirnlestein rock, which is a large rock with a metal staircase on it. From the top are good views of the plains of Alsace.
Just below the rock is a picnic area where we had our lunch. We could see there were marked routes on the rock, so it's obviously used by climbers.
We carried on our circular route which reached a high point of 780 metres, then went back to a white metal cross which can be seen from the town.
From there we could also see Engelbourg Castle across the valley, which has a donut-shaped section of its ruined tower on its side, which is known as the witches eye and is used as the symbol of the town.
We decided to walk down and up to the castle for a closer look.
From there we had a good view of Thann's church.
We walked back to the campervan, making the whole walk 17 km with 620 metres of ascent.
Later for dinner we had fresh pasta stuffed with ham and cheese, with arabiata sauce and mushrooms.
