European Trip - Day 21

Today we had breakfast in Austria, lunch in Germany and dinner in France! We'd had a close look at the weather forecast and saw that the spell of hot weather was coming to an end. Despite being 30+ degrees at the moment, it was going down to about 10 degrees within 2 or 3 days.

So we decided to follow the sun and head for Alsace in France. Before coming we'd done a bit of research on the region and it sounded like it was pretty good for walking, and at a slightly lower level than in the Alps.

We left the camp site and headed west, stopping for shopping and fuel on the way. Austrian tolls had one more sting in the tail, charging 12.50 euros to go through a 16 km tunnel, which was really just one tunnel of many that were already included in the vignette fee.

Over the border in Germany we stopped at Friedrichshafen at the side of Bodensee (Lake Constance). We parked in a large car park and went for a walk at the beach, marina and port.

There's a Zeppelin museum there, and we actually saw a modern airship flying above the lake.

We had our lunch there, then carried on driving.

We crossed the border into France at the Rhine valley, then entered the forest-covered hills of Alsace. We headed for the town of Thann in the southern part, and parked in a free aire at the edge of the town car park.

It's right next to the River Thur, and just on the other side is a vineyard on the side of a hill. Apparently it's one the premier Grand Cru vineyards in France.

Across the car park is a toilet which is one of the modern ones with an automatic door. We didn't trust it much to start with, as it keeps speaking to you in French and it's not clear what it's saying. Ultimately it seemed to work ok thougk.

We went for a walk into town, it's quite nice with a big church and some old streets.

We had a beer sitting outside a bar, then went back.

Later for dinner we had salad with avocado, white beans, leaves and tomatoes.
