European Trip - Day 34

We packed up and left the site in the morning. Jenny and Gordon's van had a battery problem and wouldn't start initially, but was fixed with a bit of tinkering.

We headed up the A1(M), A66 and M6, then stopped for some lunch at a service station on the M74, a Marks and Spencer meal deal.

There were no issues on the journey, and we arrived home about 3pm.

On this map are shown all the places we stayed overnight on the continent.

European Trip - Day 33

We had a slow start in the morning, eventually going for a circular dog walk from the site near some gravel pits. For a snack we had a jam sandwich.

We walked back into Knaresborough and had a look at Bebra Gardens, which we'd missed yesterday.

We then went back to the Six Poor Folk pub for a late lunch. We had to sit inside upstairs as all the courtyard tables were occupied. We all had burgers of one sort or another, with either hand cut chips or French fries.

For the rest of the day we just sat around the site, we used the showers later.

In the evening we ate some snacks - chips and dips, peanuts etc.

European Trip - Day 32

In contrast to our outward journey, we were off very quickly. Our van was one of the first to disembark, and there were no delays at passport control. We were on the road before 8am.

We drove to a Tesco superstore in Goole about half an hour away, and had a bacon roll for breakfast before doing some shopping for our last couple of days.

We were heading for Knaresborough Rugby Club, where there's a Camping and Caravanning Club Temporary Site where we were meeting Shirley's sister Jenny and her husband Gordon in their campervan. We got there about lunchtime.

It's a good setup, all the pitches are round the outside of the rugby park. There are toilets and showers available, though obviously no electric hookup. It cost £20 per night, that we'd paid in advance before we left the UK.

After sitting and chatting for a while we took a walk into Knaresborough. There was a market in the main square that we had a look around. The part of the town by the river and viaduct is very nice.

We walked steeply up to the castle where the view was even better.

Back in the town centre we went for a drink in a pub called Six Poor Folk, sitting outside in their courtyard.

Later back at the site Shirley made prawn Thai red curry for all of us.

European Trip - Day 31

We had time today to explore Eindhoven. We caught the bus into the centre than walked to a park that had a couple of lakes in it. There are quite a lot of art installations in the city, we passed giant skittles.

We kept walking further out then caught a bus back to the centre. There was a market there that we had a look round and checked out some fast food outlets for later.

We saw the main church, and also a street with loads of bars in it that were all closed, obviously it would very different later in the day.

We went for a drink in an outside bar that advertised 100 different beers. It was quite expensive though.

For our lunch we bought some frites with mayonnaise, then at a market stall some fried chicken. This was to be our main meal of the day as we didn't plan to eat much on the ferry.

We walked through a road tunnel that was bizarrely decorated with Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks.

We caught the bus back to the Park and Ride, then left on our drive to the ferry port in Rotterdam. We got there about 4 and took Oscar to the pet check-in at the office. All was in order and we then queued up for boarding in the campervan.

It all went smoothly. We left Oscar in the cabin and went for a drink at the Sky Bar. Then later had some wine and crisps in the cabin before going to bed.

European Trip - Day 30

We left the camp site and set off on our journey towards Rotterdam and the ferry back to the UK tomorrow. The route took us through Luxembourg so we filled up with diesel there as it's cheaper than any of the surrounding countries.

We had booked Oscar into a vet in Belgium to get his necessary tapeworm medication before entering the UK. We'd found this one on Facebook and it was great! It's in a small village south of Liege which was easy to find, and she only charged 6 euros. We've paid up to 45 euros for this in previous years.

We had initially planned to overnight in Belgium in Antwerp, but luckily found out that the potential stopover place was inside a Low Emission Zone that would have cost us 60 euros to enter. We replanned and headed for a Park and Ride car park just outside Eindhoven in the Netherlands that allows campervans to stay overnight for only 4 euros.

There's a toilet there but it was closed when we arrived. We went to the McDonalds across the road and had a milk shake and a McFlurry and used their facilities. We then took Oscar for a short walk.

The UK currently doesn't allow any meat or dairy products to be taken home from the EU, so we had a dinner using up as much of our leftover food as possible - cheese, chorizo, potatoes, onion, garlic and mushrooms, it was very good.

European Trip - Day 29

It was very hot today, so we decided to drive to the highest point in the area for a walk hoping it would be a bit cooler.

We parked in a large car park and started walking through the forest to the Champ du Feu skiing area.

At a crossroads is a lighthouse-shaped observation tower.

We came across Edelweiss Rock.

At the skiing area we found some sun loungers to sit on for our lunch.

We walked up to the top of the ski slopes then down through the forest back to the car park.

On the way back we stopped at the auberge at La Rothlach for a drink, since it was our last day in France.

After driving back to the camp site we had a barbecue of burgers, rolls, mushrooms, pepper and coleslaw.

European Trip - Day 28

We took the train to Strasbourg today.  We bought the tickets online before we left the camp site, 56 euros return for all 3 of us - you have to pay for dogs in France.

The train took about 50 minutes to get to Strasbourg central station. It was vey hot when we got there.

We first walked to the area called La Petite France, which is picturesque with waterways and old buildings. There's a bridge you can climb up to get a good view.

We had a walk round the streets and saw the impressive cathedral. It was very busy with tourists.

We bought some pastries and had a walk round the river bank where we stopped at the water's edge for our lunch.

On the way back to the centre we came a cross a wedding with the people dancing in the street.

We made our way back to the station and caught the train back to Rothau.

We bought some Alsace wine at the local shop to take home.

Later for dinner we had a barbecue of chicken skewers, courgette, pepper, new potatoes with coleslaw and beetroot salad.
