Northern Ireland - Day 3

We drove to Strangford Lough today. We planned to park at Castel Ward, a National Trust property, and walk round the grounds. However when we got there they wanted to charge us the full castle admission fee, £26, even if we only wanted to park, so we declined. Fortunately we were able to park at the side of the road not far away, and we went back in for our walk.

We did a nice circular walk which took in most of the perimeter, with a bit at the side of the lough.

One of the Game of Thrones filming locations is there. This was the courtyard for Winterfell Castle, though they use CGI to add in a matching tower on the other side of the gate.

Further round is Audley's Castle, which was also used for a battle scene in Game of Thrones.

Castle Ward has a nice restored Victorian sunken garden.

Once back at the van we decided to drive all the way round Strangford Lough, which involved getting a ferry across the sea inlet, from Strangford to Portaferry.

At the top of the lough at Newtonards we went for a short walk on the flood barrier, but it wasn't very exciting.

We went to Tesco in Newtonards for some shopping, then drove back to the site. Later we had beef chilli and rice for dinner.
