Jasper - Sulphur Skyline Trail

Made our own toast for breakfast today.

Weather clear and sunny this morning. We headed for the Sulphur Skyline Trail, a hike up to a ridge at 2050m (6725ft). Views from there were spectacular. There was a fair bit of snow towards the top, some of it fresh overnight (we could tell we were only the second people to the top today) and some year-round stuff. Saw some pikas (small tail-less rodents, like big hamsters).

Some evidence that there had been bears on the the path not long before:

Since there were more "must see" attractions in the area than we had time to see, we decided to hurry back down to the car and drive 90 minutes to Maligne Lake to take the boat cruise to Spirit Island. On the way we saw deer by the roadside.

On the cruise the visibility wasn't great but still well worth doing. Spirit Island is one of the most photographed sights in the Rockies.

On the way back to the accommodation we saw more elk and a fox.

Dinner was at the L&W restaurant in Jasper - trout and barbecued chicken. Went for a walk under the railway underpass and came up to find ourselves in the middle of a herd of elk, with a rather protective male.
