Rhodes - Day 3

We had cereal for breakfast today, weather was a bit cloudy.

We drove to the village of Monolithos on the other (west) side of island. Just to the south of the village was a viewpoint to a castle standing on a rock. It was very windy there.

We drove back through the village and parked at the side of the road just out of town, at the start of our hill walk for today. We are climbing up Mount Akrimitis, the second highest point on the island at 825m.

To start with the path goes steeply up through the forest. It's sheltered, so was very hot in the sun.

After about 45 minutes it levelled out and the path went across a pretty grassy glade with the remains of the spring wild flowers.

We eventually came to a very isolated chapel, with ancient frescoes inside and a well in its courtyard. We stopped for lunch here.

We continued our climb, and it got much steeper as we neared the top. There was an old abandoned fire lookout post there, with its own sleeping accommodation.

Finally we reached the summit post, the views were amazing though it was a bit hazy.

We then walked back down by the same route, it was extremely hot by now.

We drove north to the village of Siana, famed for its pine and thyme honey, creamy yoghurt and souma, the local ouzo-like spirit. First we went into a tavern and ordered some yoghurt and honey.

Then we wandered through the village, it has an impressive church and lots of shops selling the local produce. We had a drink on a rooftop terrace and bought some honey and souma to take away.

As we drove back to Pefkos we saw a fox by the roadside. Back at the apartment we showered and had a few drinks, including a taste of the souma - firewater!

We went out for dinner at Taverna Nikolas. Scott had lamb shank with balsamic vinegar and parmesan, Shirley had stuffed peppers and tomatoes. Both were excellent. We were given a free cake with cream for pudding and a liqueur.
