We decided to drive to Rhodes town for a look around. It took about an hour to get there, and we found a street parking place just outside the city wall on the south side.
From there we walked across the moat and into the medieval walled part of the city.
We followed a walking tour from our guidebook, through the maze of quaint narrow streets. It was mostly quite quiet, except the central touristy bit.
We went into the restored synagogue, apparently there is only a very small Jewish community now, it used to be very significant before the war.
In the most central part there are loads of taverns and restaurants, each of them with very enthusiastic, sometimes overly so, touts outside trying to persuade you to buy a drink or a meal. We resisted them all :-)
We walked round the two harbours, firstly the commercial one. We saw a large starfish on the seabed as we walked round.
Then the ancient Mandraki one, where the colossus of Rhodes was believed to have straddled the entrance.
We walked up the impressive Avenue of the Knights up to the Citadel.
We paid for a walk round the city wall, which goes about two thirds of the way round. Good views both into and out of the old city.
At the end of the wall walk we went down into the streets and had lunch at a taverna called Laganis. Greek salad, hummus, pita bread and feta cheese, delicious.
After this we walked back round the moat which goes around the outside of the wall.
There's a small amphitheatre in the moat, Scott had a bit of a Greek dance.
At the other side of the city we went up the clock tower - you pay to get in but get a "free" drink at the bar. Good views again from the top.
We made our way back to car and drove back, visiting a big Carrefour supermarket for provisions on the way. We stopped at Haraki, where we had a walk along the promenade and had an ice cream.
We also had a look inside its church.
After this we went back to the apartment, for showers and beer. Went out to Elias for dinner, Scott had moussaka and Shirley beef stifado, both were OK but not outstanding. We had a drink at Angels on the way home.
