France Trip - Day 26

We had Oscar booked into a vet in Osmanville at 11am so we drove there, it's only about 15 minutes away.

The worming treat went without a hitch, and his Animal Health Certificate was updated for our journey home on Monday.

We drove on to Les Moulins, which is a village right at the centre of Omaha Beach, the largest of the beaches that the Americans landed at on D-Day. After parking we walked down to the sea front. There are a lot of tourists around, many of them American as you'd expect.

We set off on a circular walk to the east, which went along behind the beach, past a lot of the WW2 installations and memorials (of which there are very many).

When we were higher up we had a good view of the beach, it really is very big.

Some of the German blockhouses are being incorporated into the houses and gardens of the locals.

We walked as far as Widerstandsnest 60. Widerstandsnests are German stronghold positions that comprised gun positions, bunkers, trenches etc. We managed to find some shade there to have our lunch.

We walked back inland along lanes, passing Omaha Beach airstrip, which was created within 2 days of the D-Day landing.

Next we came to the huge American Cemetery. We've been there before, and dogs aren't allowed, so Shirley stayed resting in the shade of some trees while Scott went in for a quick look round.

We eventually returned to the van, and drove back to the campsite.

Later we walked to a restaurant at the marina for dinner. We had a Fried Platter, comprising chicken, onion rings, deep fried camembert and chips, which they said was enough for two. It wasn't great though.
