We left the aire in La Rochelle, and drove onto the Île de Ré, an island just to the north. It's connected to the mainland by a bridge, which cost a surprising 16 euros to cross (free to come back though).
The first town we came to was Flotte, and we parked on the fee aire at the edge of town and walked to the harbour.
We wandered round the narrow streets and came across quite a large market selling local produce.
We went to the campsite we'd chosen, the municipal site in Saint Martin de Ré. We only booked in for one night though, as the weather forecast was showing that another heatwave was on the way and we wanted to go north soon to keep ahead of it. It's about £24.80 including electricity.
After choosing our pitch we drove off again, as there weren't any decent walks we could do from the site. We went to the village of Ars-en-Ré further west on the island, and parked on the edge. We then want for a walk across the ancient salt pans, heading for the coast.
However when we got to the coast the tide was miles out, we could hardly see the sea at all.
On the way back round to the village harbour we saw that some of the salt pans are now used for seafood cultivation, mussels and oysters.
We had a little wander round the streets, then headed back to the campsite.
Later we walked down to the harbour, and round some of the town's fortifications. It's a busy place, with lots of tourists, boat people and diners around.
There's a swing bridge to help crossing to the other side of the harbour, but it was open for boats coming in and we gave up waiting for it to be swung back and walked round the long way.
We had a drink at one of the harbourside bars, then walked back to the site.
Later for dinner we had ham and ricotta pasta with chilli sauce.
