We bought croissants and pains au chocolat from the local shop for our breakfast, along with a baguette for our lunch. We then left the aire and headed to a village on the west side of the Cherbourg peninsula, Saint-Jean-le-Thomas.
We planned to do a coastal walk there so parked next to the beach. From there we could see Mont St Michel in the distance.
We walked north up the coast above the cliffs. There wasn't as much tree cover as we'd hoped, so it was a very hot walk. We had frequent stops so we and especially Oscar could cool down.
The walk incorporates three historic lookout cabins, but we only went as far as the second one before turning back as it was too hot.
After returning to the van we drove on, via a supermarket, to Carentan. This town is very near the D-Day beaches, situated between Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. We checked in to the Haut Dick campsite for 4 nights at about £28.90 per night including electricity. The site has a swimming pool and good facilities.
They gave us quite a big pitch.
We had welcome showers, then later for dinner we had walnut and blue cheese salad with new potatoes.
