European Trip - Day 8

We left the Worth camp site in the morning, and drove to the Grossglockner Pass. This is a spectacular road that leads to the Grossglockner glacier. It costs 45 euros to drive it, but it was very busy, with loads of motorbikes and exotic sports cars making the journey.

We parked at the car park near the road end at the glacier, and walked up to the shops, restaurants and visitor's centre there.

From this point we followed the path overlooking the glacier itself, which goes through a series of six tunnels with viewpoints between each one. Shirley had been to see the glacier over 30 years ago, and was shocked how much it had melted in the meantime. The mouth was at least a mile further up the valley and it was much lower.

At the end of the sixth tunnel there was a sign saying it wasn't advisable to go further due to rockfalls. However it looked reasonably safe to use so we threw caution to the wind and carried on. We went as far as a picnic area a couple of miles on.

Back at the visitor centre we looked across to the summit of Grossglockner itself, which is 3798 metres high. We could just make out a group of climbers leaving the summit.

We walked back to the car park and had our lunch overlooking the view there. We saw a marmot.

We drove back over the pass and stopped at another attraction, the Edelweiss mountain/viewpoint. Campervans weren't allowed to drive up to the top so we walked up the steep path in the heat, it was quite hard going. There were good views from the top, many of the mountains we could see had glacier on them.

We drove back down and went on to our next camp site, Panoramacamp at Zell Am See. This was 58 euros per night, including EHU, showers and tourist tax. It was very hot when we got there, 32 degrees.

We went for a walk to the beach on the lake, but no dogs were allowed there so we couldn't get near the water. We went back to the shop/bar at the camp site but it wasn't very nice so we had our beer at the van instead.

Later we had walnut and blue cheese salad with new potatoes.
