We drove the van to Schmittel again and parked in the same car park just below the cable cars. This time we bought a return ticket on the Schmittenhohebahn cable car costing 85 euros in total including Oscar.
From the top of Schmittenhohe, at about 2000 metres high, we started walking on the Pinzgauer Trail. This full trail is a 16 km one way ridge walk, but the logistics of getting transport back from the other end was too difficult, so we did part of it as an out-and-back.
The views were good from the start.
The walk went steeply down to start with, then back up to the ridge. Rather than stay on the ridge we also added a climb to the summit of Maurerkogel at 2074 metres. The summit was occupied by some cows and horse though, so we didn't stay long.
We then carried on the Pinzgauer trail, which was relatively easy going compared to the earlier climb.
We walked as far as a shelter hut, where we stopped for our lunch before turning back.
The walk back was just as spectacular, but the climb at the end back to the cable car station was a bit of a killer.
We walked a total of 17 km with 720 metres of ascent.
We had a welcome cold beer at the bar at the end, then spent a bit of time taking in the views.
We caught the cable car back down, then drove back to the camp site.
Later for dinner we had a barbecue of marinated chicken, peppers, courgette and kartofel salad.
