We left the site and drove to the head of the valley to the ski resort of Mont Dore Station. We parked in a free car park and set off. There was a cable car running there for those not up to walking to the top.
The plan was to walk up one valley through a nature reserve, and return by a different route. However the way was barred by a gate and some mountain rescue people, who informed us that dogs weren't allowed in the nature reserve.
This meant we had to backtrack a bit, and could only do the ascent and descent by the main path.
Just after we started, we found ourselves at the source of the Dordogne river. It consists of the Dore and the Dogne, which join together just here.
It was a nice day and we had fine views as we went up. We saw a few Chamois on the hillside.
As we neared the top it got busy, as we joined the people who'd come up in the cable car.
There was a long wooden staircase that took us to the summit, Puy de Sancy at 1886 metres, our highest peak of the holiday.
We wandered around near the top for a bit, going along a ridge and back, before descending.
After returning to the van we drove on, stopping at Lidl in La Barboule for provisions. Then we went on to the village of Pontgibaud, where we checked in to the municipal camp site.
For dinner we had a barbecue of marinated pork steaks, peppers, courgettes and new potatoes.
Later we went for a walk into the village.
