Arran - Day 7

We packed up and left the site in the morning. We stopped at Sannox for a walk on the beach, but the tide was in so there wasn't much room for Oscar to run about. He swam across the river there and almost got away!

We stopped at Corrie for coffee and a cookie at the Mara Fish Bar.

We then made our way back to Brodick and joined the queue at the ferry terminal. This time we left Oscar in the van, and he was fine for the 1 hour trip.

From Ardrossan we drove straight home.

Arran - Day 6

We went a circular walk from the site today. First we left Lochranza passing the distillery, and headed up the glen towards Loch na Davie.

We saw a golden eagle high in the sky.

Shirley was trying out walking poles on this walk.

We reached Loch na Davie which is reputed to be a source of the purest water in Scotland. It didn't look all that clean to us to be honest.

Red deer were watching us from the surrounding hills.

There were nice view down a remote glen.

The way down the other side was very boggy, Scott stepped in a rather deep bit.

There was a very clear burn beside the path for a lot of the way.

We passed through a nature reserve where there is supposed to be the only wild example in the world of a tree called the Catacol Whitebeam. We didn't see it but later found a little arboretum where they are growing some other examples of it and other rare trees.

We reached the road and walk back to Lochranza, passing a row of 12 fishermen's cottages at Catacol.

As we passed the sandwich shop we had a coffee, then went back to the van.

Later we had beef chilli and rice for dinner.

Arran - Day 5

We packed up and left the site, and drove to the south of the island at the tiny village of Kildonan. We parked and went for a short walk on the beach. There were loads of seals basking.

We drove on to Blackwaterfoot on the west side of Arran, and went for a circular walk round a volcanic outcrop called the Doon.

We carried on round the circumference of Arran, and got to Lochranza in the north, where we'd booked into the camp site there. From the owner we discovered that the only hotel in the village had closed down, so there were almost no facilities. Only a sandwich shop which closed at 4.

After setting up we went for a walk down to the ferry terminal, on the way passing a herd of red deer and Lochranza castle.

We walked back to the van, and later had tuna pasta for dinner.

Arran - Day 4

We walked from the site again today, this time heading south down the coast. For a lot of the way there is a boardwalk just back from the beach. However both the beach and the boardwalk were slippery and it was quite a difficult walk.

We got to Kingscross point, with views across to the lighthouse on Holy Isle and also the remains of a Viking fort.

We had our lunch on the beach, then headed into the village of Whiting Bay and walked down the road a bit.

From Whiting Bay we walked up to Glenashdale Falls. We saw a red squirrel there, but weren't quick enough to photograph it.

Then it was a long walk back along a forestry track back to Lamlash, via the duck pond we'd been to a couple of days ago.

Back at the site we found we had a new neighbour who'd brought their cat and let it wander about attached to a lead. Oscar was transfixed.

Later for dinner we had root vegetable curry with naan bread.
