Scarborough - Day 8

We packed up and left the site in the morning. Oscar slept very well in the van, so we kept driving as far as Berwick upon Tweed. There we had a Macdonald's for lunch (no milkshake!).

The journey was smooth and we got home before 4pm.

Scarborough - Day 7

We decided to drive to Goathland today. This is the village where the Heartbeat serial was filmed.

First we did a short circular walk to the Malyam Spout waterfall.

After returning to the village we waited for the heritage train to take us a single stop down the line to Newtondale Halt. It was hot and sunny, and the train was about an hour late in leaving.

It dropped us off at the halt, which is in the middle of nowhere, not near any road. We had our lunch there and it was very quiet.

From there we had about a 6 mile walk across the moors back to the start.

As we neared the end of the walk we came across a large party of grouse shooters. They spoke to us to make sure we were going to stay on the path. After we'd passed them we could hear a fairly large number of shots at the game birds.

We drove back to the site, and later had chilli and rice for dinner.

Scarborough - Day 6

Today we walked straight from the site to the coast, heading north this time. It started off hazy and muggy but later became very hot and sunny.

There were lots of sloes growing in the hedgerow at the side of the path.

There was quite a lot of descent and ascent at this part of the path. At one point we went down to a waterfall.

We started to see Robin Hood's Bay in the distance.

We saw some seals swimming in the sea. We went down one last time to the cove at Boggle Hole.

Eventually we arrived at Robin Hood's Bay. We sat outside the Bay Hotel and had a couple of welcome pints.

We had to walk up the hill to the top of the village to catch the X94 bus. However it did take us all the way back to the entrance of the camp site.

Later we had salmon with new potatoes for dinner.

Scarborough - Day 5

We drove a few miles north west and parked in Reasty Bank Car Park. We then did a circular walk round Broxa forest. It had good views on the outward section but wasn't really very exciting otherwise.

It was getting very sunny, and the sight of an ice cream stall in the car park was welcome.

After this we decided to got to Whitby for a wander round. We parked in the car park near the Abbey, and walked into town via the famous staircase with 199 steps.

Down in the town we wandered through the cobbled streets and then out to the pier. It was very busy with tourists.

After climbing back up the steps and looking at the churchyard we headed back to the site.

Later for dinner we had root vegetable curry with naan bread.

Scarborough - Day 4

Today we walked down the coastal path to the next resort, Filey. Since the camp site is north of Scarborough, first we had to walk past it. The tide was out when we passed the harbour.

After Scarborough the path went up along the clifftops. We caught a heavy rain shower but fortunately we had some shelter from trees.

It got a lot warmer after that. Further down we came to Cayton Bay beach which was quite busy, we had our lunch there.

There we some wartime lookout posts that presumably had been built on the clifftop, but now had ended up on the beach because of coastal erosion.

At Filey we reached the end of the Cleveland Way long distance path.

We had a little walk round Filey, but it wasn't very exciting.

We caught the bus back to Scarborough. Oscar loved sitting at the front upstairs.

At Scarborough we had time to go for a pint at the Stumble Inn, a micropub which was very nice.

We caught the X94 bus back to the site. Later we ordered a takeaway from the Scalby Manor - we both had burgers, they were very good.
