In the morning we headed in to Castlebay to have our breakfast with a view over the port and the castle.
We drove to the far north of Barra, and parked at the jetty in Eoligarry. We walked down the beach and across to the tidal island of Orosay.
This beach had millions of cockle shells, intact in some places and broken in others.
We were heading for Barra airport, the only airport in the world where the runway is the beach at low tide. They fly windsocks to signify a plane is going to land soon and you can't approach too close on the beach. We sat and watched the Loganair plane from Glasgow land, then walked to the airport terminal and a little while later saw it take off again.
We then walked to the beach on the west side of the peninsula, up Ben Eoligarry and across to an iron age fort, Dun Scurrival.
We descended and walked along the road back to the jetty, passing Saint Barr's Church. The cemetery here contains the grave of Compton Mackenzie, the author of Whisky Galore.
We drove to Scurrival campsite in the far north of Barra, where we got a pitch without electric hookup for £16. This included the showers though. It has great views across to Eriskay and South Uist.
We had a short walk on the nearby beach, and later had root vegetable curry with naan bread.
