Western Isles - Day 11

We set off from the car park to walk the Eagle Observation Trail.

It's about a 3 km walk to the hide, and it was lovely and sunny. It was quite quiet, though we did chat to a couple of other people who were out.

We managed to see one single golden eagle high above the hilltop, too far away to photograph though.

Back at the van we drove round to the east side of Harris, and across the bridge to the island of Scalpay. We parked up and set off on a walk round the island.

We went round lochs, over moorland and up to peaks with great views.

Eventually we found ourselves at Eilean Glas lighthouse. This is run as a cafe by a lovely couple, who have to bring all supplies on foot from the nearest road about a mile away. We had some coffee and cake, and had a look around. Part of the old lighthouse is still there, which was one of the first ever built in Scotland.

After our break we completed our circular walk by going through Ardinashaig, the main settlement on the island.

Back at the van we headed north, driving out of Harris and into Lewis. The landscape changed dramatically, Lewis is much flatter, with either cultivated land or featureless moors.

We headed to Tesco in Stornoway for provisions and fuel. It was quite a culture shock how busy it is there compared to the rest of the islands. Half of all people in the Western Isles live in Stornoway.

We headed further north, to park overnight outside Sporsnis, a sports centre in the village of Ness near the tip of the island.

Dinner was salmon with potatoes, peas, and sweetcorn.
