Gran Canaria - Day 5

We drove into the hills near the centre of the island today, parking the the village of Santa Lucia. There was an interesting statue next to the car park, and a building built like a castle at the start of the walk.

The walk took us away from the village and meandered downhill past a cemetery.

We headed for a famous cave called La Fortaleza, which was occupied by the original inhabitants of the island before the Europeans arrived. It goes through a rock and is open at both ends.

There are a lot of other old inhabited caves in the area too.

The path took us past a pretty dry reservoir, through a village and then uphill past some farms back to the start.

Once back at Santa Lucia we still had some time (and energy) so we went on a short walk to see some old mills. The path was actually steeper than we anticipated so it took quite a bit of effort.

The total distance walked was about 15 km with about 500 metres of ascent.

On return to the village we had a look round the church and main square.

Before leaving we had a drink at a bar in the village.

We drove back down, and it was still warm and sunny enough to go and sit at the sunbeds by our pool.

Later for dinner we had burgers, potato wedges and peas.
