Gran Canaria - Day 3

We did a one-way walk today, part of the Camino de Santiago which crosses the whole island south to north. We decided we would get the bus up into the hills and walk back down. The bus stop was only 10 minutes from the bungalow and we caught it at 9.34.

This took us to the village of Arteara, about 40 minutes away. The land around this village is well irrigated and there are lots of palm trees and fruit trees.

Just outside the village is an aboriginal burial ground, with over 800 tombs of red stone in which people were buried about 2,000 years ago.

We carried on down the path which followed a gorge towards the coast, passing some derelict farms and smallholdings. Only very occasionally did we see any that were still being cultivated.

There was an old aqueduct that followed the path, though the water is enclosed in a plastic pipe these days.

The walls of the gorge have loads of caves, and the vegetation is mainly cactuses.

We were passed a few times by quad bike safaris, and also saw some rock climbers.

Opposite a large quarry the aqueduct is supported by some impressive arches.

Eventually the gorge opens out into a wide river bed, and then we passed the motorway on the outskirts of town. The total length of the walk was about 17 km with 500 metres of descent.

We hadn't passed any suitable bars or cafes before reaching the bungalow, so we decided to go for a drive round the coast. We drove to Arguineguin and parked in a large free parking area near the centre of the town. We had a walk along the promenade, but unfortunately the weather closed in and it was quite cold with heavy drizzle.

We had a drink in a bar until the rain eased, then drove home to the bungalow.

Later for dinner we had a lasagne we'd bought from Lidl.
