We went to the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We drove up the motorway and parked in a busy car park near to the old part of the city, Vegueta.
Right next to the car park was an indoor market, with fish, meat and fruit and vegetables, so we went in for a look around.
The last picture above shows tamarinds and prickly pear fruit.
We walked through the old streets to the cathedral.
We paid to go into the cathedral, which was quite plain but very nice inside.
We climbed the stairs up to the top of the tower, which had good views all around.
Next was a small museum arranged round a nice courtyard.
We walked into the adjacent Triana district, which is also quite old but has lots of shops and restaurants. The main pedestrianised street is very long and straight. We had an ice cream there.
We went back to the car to drive to the northernmost part of the city, near the Canteras beach. We parked in a multi storey car park there.
We planned to do a walk to a viewpoint on a hill on the peninsula north of the city. First the path was on a promenade next to buildings, then became a boardwalk and a hill path.
The weather was looking a bit gloomy as we headed to the viewpoint, so we hoped the rain wouldn't come in before we got back. At the top of the hill the views back were pretty good.
We headed back to the starting point, and the rain started a few minutes before the end. It became very heavy, so we thought we were quite lucky. The walk distance was about 6 km with 160 metres of ascent.
We went to a bar behind the beach for a drink and to wait till the rain eased.
We drove back to Maspalomas. By then the sun was shining again, so we took some drinks and snacks to the pool and sat there for a bit.
After showering we went out for dinner, walking again to Playa del Ingles. We stopped in a bar on the way for an Aperol Spritz, which was pretty expensive but we also think it was very strong!
We went to the Tenderete del Sabor restaurant, which is Colombian. For starter we had an empanada (savoury pastry) and fried Yuca strips with salsa dip.
For the main course Scott had pork belly, sausage, pulled pork and a fried egg, and Shirley had skirt steak with Creole sauce. Both came with cornmeal fritters, plantain, rice and avocado. It was quite unusual and very good.
We walked back home after the meal.
