Sicily - Day 7

Today we drove to the village of Taormina, about an hour up the coast. This meant going on a toll motorway, and in the process we were naively scammed out of 5 euros by a woman standing next to the toll booth who gave us our ticket. It turns out you don't pay at the start, you pay when you exit, and it was only supposed to be just over 1 euro.

We parked in a multi storey car park and walked into the village, which is built half way up a hill.

From there we started a steep walk up to Castelmola, a higher village perched on a rock, with a castle at the top. On the way there are good views down to Taormina and the coast.

We went into a church built into the rock.

At the top we had a look round the ruined castle.

We decided to keep on walking up, to the top of Monte Veneretta, an 884 meter mountain. It was very steep and hot going, and quite rocky near the top, but we made it eventually.

On the way back down we took more time to appreciate the views.

We had an ice cream at Castelmola.

Once back in Taormina we returned to the car and headed back to Catania. After a drink in the bar at our local square, we went in and later had pork chops, chips and peas for dinner.
