Breakfast was included with the hotel. It was a decent spread of bread, meat and cheese, and many pastries.
We spent the day in Palermo city today. We followed the walking guide in the Lonely Planet book, first going to the Mercato di BallarĂ², the main city market.
There are loads of stalls with fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese fish, spices and all sort of things. Many street food stalls too.
Further out from the centre it becomes a much more scruffy flea market.
We then had a good wander round various piazzas, churches, fountains etc. It was all very interesting, a mix of beautiful architecture with a slightly dilapidated feel, and characterful, scruffy sidestreets.
We went into the Monastero di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, saw the monks accommodation and got up to the roof of its associated church.
The monastery had its own bakery.
We walked towards the seafront, passing though a park on the way which had some amazing trees.
For lunch were were lucky to find a very popular street food stall, Friggitoria Chiluzzo, where we sampled quite a few things: fried chickpea sandwich, roast aubergine salad, fried potato croquettes, ham & cheese arancini.
We then wandered up to the main Cathedral, where we went in and paid so we could get up on the roof.
We went to a bar for a Aperol Spritz, which everyone seemed to be drinking in Palermo.
After going back to the hotel to shower and change we went out.
We had pizza at Assud a Santamarina Pizzeria Siciliana. Shirley had a Parmigiana which was excellent, Scott had a Gattopardo (Leopard) which had 2 types of ham and was OK.
