Sicily - Day 4

We followed a city walk listed in the guidebook. First we went to the fish market, which was pretty busy.

There were colourful umbrellas suspended above the market.

We had a look round the Cattedrale di Sant'Agata in the main square.

Also in the main square is a statue of an elephant with an obelisk perched on top, which is the symbol of Catania.

We then visited the Greek - Roman theatre just up the road. This is a large theatre surrounded by modern apartment blocks on all sides.

After this we went for some lunch at a nearby street food shop. Shirley had a cheese and spinach pastry while Scott had a deep fried thing containing cheese and what might have been spleen, a traditional "delicacy" here. We also bought two canelonis, which are a traditional sweet pastry filled with ricotta cheese.

We walked up to the park at Villa Bellini to have our lunch.

Very near the main shopping street is another Roman amphitheatre.

We wanted to climb to the roof of a church overlooking the main square, but it was closed until later so we decided to come back after dark. We had a drink at a bar just off the shopping street, then went home via Lidl to buy some more provisions.

Later we had a drink at the bar in our small local square, then went to the Badia di Sant'Agata church and paid to get up onto the roof.

After this we walked through the marketplace, and had a drink at one of the bars there.

We went back to the apartment and made dinner, fresh pasta with arrabiata sauce.
