Scottish Borders - Day 4

We packed up and left the site, deciding to go to Selkirk for a short walk before going home. We parked in the lower part of town and joined the path up Ettrick Water.

We walked as far as the weir, with its hydroelectric power station and salmon ladder.

We then walked back via the old water-powered sawmill.

At the same spot is the salmon viewing centre, with a TV monitor looking at the salmon ladder. We didn't see any fish though.

We walked back to Selkirk then drove home, arriving about 4pm.

Scottish Borders - Day 3

We did the next leg of the Borders Abbey Way, this time starting by getting the bus to Hawick. First we packed up and left the site, then drove and parked in the public car park in Jedburgh.

We caught the 9.50 bus to Hawick and made our way down to the River Teviot. We walked along the side of it for a bit, then just at the edge of town came across a house with amazing Halloween decorations.

We then carried on. We met a man who'd lost his dog, so we kept an eye out for it but didn't see it. At one point the route was closed because of a landslip so we were diverted onto the road, which made the walk a bit longer.

We stopped for lunch at the village of Denholm.

From here the route left the river and went uphill through some woods. We came across what we think is a squirrel trap.

At the top of the hill it was more exposed, and it was raining a bit by then.

Eventually we went down the other side and back into Jedburgh.

We then drove on to our next site, which was Kirkfield Caravan Park in the small village of Town Yetholm. After setting up we went for a walk into the village, and went for a drink in the Plough Hotel.

Later we had Thai prawn curry for dinner.

Scottish Borders - Day 2

We'd decided that on this trip were were going to do a couple of legs of the Borders Abbey Way, a circular long distance walk which takes in four abbeys.

From the bus stop just outside the site we caught the 9.40 bus to Kelso. It was raining a little, but had stopped by the time we got there.

From the centre of Kelso we walked past the abbey and over the Tweed bridge.

The walk route then went along the River Teviot, a tributary of the Tweed. The weather was bright and the views were good.

We went into the little village of Roxburgh, where the church is up for sale at offers over £95,000!

Most of the second half of the walk is along an old railway track, which isn't quite as picturesque as the first part. Eventually we rejoined the Teviot and walked round the edge of the flood defences.

The very last part was up a hill and the through woods down into Jedburgh. It stayed reasonably sunny most of the day.

Later for dinner we had a dish made from Camembert cheese, bacon, onions and potatoes.

Scottish Borders - Day 1

We left home in the campervan after lunch, and drove to the Camping and Caravanning Club site at Jedburgh. It's less than a mile outside the town, and it's a pleasant walk by the river to get there.

In the town we had a look at Jedburgh Abbey, and the castle.

We'd read that the butcher in the High Street, Briggsys, did very good steak pies, so we bought a large one for £7.20.

Back at the site later we had the steak pie with new potatoes and peas. It was great, lots of big chunks of succulent meat.

Oban - Day 4

We decided to go home today as the weather forecast wasn't looking too great. First we did one last walk, so after packing up and leaving the site we drove through Oban to the Ganavan Sands car park.

From there we walked north up the coast. It was drizzly the whole time and wet and muddy underfoot. Oscar got soaked through.

At the tip of the peninsula we reached Dunstaffnage Castle. We didn't pay to go in the castle itself, but went to its chapel in the woods.

After walking back to the car park we set off home. The journey went fine, we stopped once at Tyndrum for a short walk.

We arrived home about 4pm.

Oban - Day 3

It started off sunny this morning again. We drove down to Seil Island, which has the famous Bridge over the Atlantic.

We parked just next to it then walked over to the west side of the island. Over there are some nice beaches and inlets, and an old shipwreck.

We then walked down the west shore. At one point we were very near a bunch of bird shooters, and Oscar was a bit unnerved by the noise.

After a bit we crossed back to the east and sat by the water to have our lunch.

After returning to the van we drove to the south of Seil Island and went for another circular walk, this time including the ferry terminal which goes across to Luing Island.

We then drove along to the village of Ellenabeich. This is very picturesque, with rows of little white cottages. These were for slate quarry workers - Seil Island and a few others in the vicinity are known as the Slate Islands.

We then drove back to the camp site. The rain started, and continued for most of the evening and night.

Later we had Thai prawn curry for dinner.
