Ardnamurchan - Day 6

We were leaving today, but first decided to walk up to the viewpoint above the campsite. It was quite a tough climb, through woodland and grassy slopes.

The views were good though.

We headed down the road home, stopping for a bacon roll at the Real Food Café in Tyndrum on the way.

Ardnamurchan - Day 5

We walked from the site again today, heading up the Strontian River glen. There was a sign advising us not to take the south path due to a flood-damage bridge, but we went anyway and it was fine.

We then crossed the River Strontian and continued the walk in Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve. This is a spectacular ancient forest, with everything covered in bright green moss.

The path goes up to an old lead mine, where we stopped for lunch. We decided to go no further as it was pretty rainy, so headed back downhill.

We stopped for coffee and cake again at the Ariundle Centre.

Ardnamurchan - Day 4

We went out in the van today, heading out to explore the Morven Peninsula, which is to the south of Ardnamurchan.

First we drove down the very narrow and quiet coast road, then parked at the Rahoy Hills wildlife reserve. We went for a walk along the side of Loch Arienas, it was pretty wet and boggy.

We drove down to the Lochaline ferry terminal, and had venison burgers for lunch at the snack bar there.

We drove all the way along the bottom of the peninsula as far as the road goes, to Drimnin, then turned around and came back.

We went to see the Aoineadh Mor Historic Township, and had a walk round the ruined houses there.

We drove back to the site, stopping at Strontian Stores to buy a cake on the way.

Ardnamurchan - Day 3

We walked from the site this morning, heading towards the hill Resipol, which we'd climbed from the other side the last time we were in Ardnamurchan.

The weather wasn't great, so we started up the somewhat boggy track.

We walked quite a way up, but further on it was pathless and very boggy, so we decided not to go the whole way. Scott still went up to the top of Beinn a'Chaoruinn with Oscar.

We went down a slightly different way, and called in at the Ariundle Centre for coffee and cake before getting back to the van.

Later we went out for a drink at the Strontian Hotel.

Ardnamurchan - Day 2

Today we drove all the way along the peninsula and parked at the tiny village of Portuairk.

We walked north up the coast to Sanna Bay, a spectacular set of beaches.

We could see Ardnamurchan lighthouse down the coast.

We walked out to Sanna Point, then wandered around the rocks and had our lunch.

We walked back down the coast to our starting point, looking for otters on the way. We didn't see any.

We drove to the Kilchoan community centre and had coffee and cake, then carried on to our campsite at Strontian.

We went for a short walk in the woods later.

Ardnamurchan - Day 1

We left the house in the morning and drove up through Callander, Crianlarich and Tyndrum, then through Glen Coe. We stopped at the Signal Rock car park for a sandwich.

We went on and caught the Corran ferry across Loch Linnhe.

We drove on to the Forestry & Land Scotland carp park at the Garbh Eilean wildlife wide.

We went for a circular walk at the coast, then stopped at the hide for a while. We didn't see much!

We had sweet and sour chicken for dinner later.

Troon - Day 3

The weather forecast wasn't brilliant so we decided that we would go for a walk today and then go home. We left the site and drove into Troon, and parked near to South Beach.

We caught the bus to Ayr and got off in the centre. We then walked back to the coast and headed north. We didn't see much sunshine, and it rained a bit too.

It was still good to be able to let Oscar off the lead on the beach though, despite the rain!

It was nice to get back to the warmth of the campervan.

We went for coffee and a cake at Bloom Coffee Kitchen, then made our way home.

Troon - Day 2

We walked from the site and caught two buses, first to Irvine then to Kilwinning. We first had a look at Kilwinning Abbey.

The path then went along the River Garnock and the River Irvine, till we got to Irvine itself. At the harbour was a maritime museum which has small-scale Kelpies.

We had our lunch at the harbourside, then went down towards the sea. There's a bridge that was built for an exhibition centre that opened around 2000 but closed in 2003 and the bridge isn't used any more.

Once we got to the sea there was a wide sandy beach that took us all six miles back to Troon, and it was great for Oscar to be let off the lead to run about.

The weather was reasonable, a bit windy but dry and with some sunshine. Once we got back to Troon we walked all the way round the harbour peninsula, then went for a drink in McKay's pub.

We got the bus back to the site, and later had a pork mince dish with fennel and pasta for dinner.
