Andalucia - Day 2 - Caminito Del Rey

There was heavy rain and thunderstorms during the night. We had breakfast of toast, coffee etc., then checked out.

In advance of the holiday we'd booked tickets to allow us to walk the Caminito Del Rey, a famous suspended walkway through a gorge.

We drove for 20 minutes to El Chorro station where we were catching the shuttle bus to the start of the walk. At the north entrance we had a half hour walk to the ticket office where we picked up our helmets.

It had stopped raining by now. The walk through the gorge took about two and a half hours. The walkway is suspended 100m above the ground. As long as you had a head for heights, it wasn't really risky at all, though it was spectacular.

The lower path is the old path which fell into disrepair, and a number of people were killed attempting to use it. The upper path is the result of a renovation completed in 2015.

There were Griffon vultures flying above the gorge.

There's a railway track on the opposite side, which goes through a number of tunnels.

At the far end, you cross the gorge by means of a suspension bridge.

We got back to the car and drove to Córdoba, it took just over two hours.

We got a bit lost in the narrow streets, but eventually found our accommodation, Apartments La Fuente. We checked in then parked the car across the river where it was free.

We then went to the room and freshened up. In the evening we walked into town and tried lots of tapas bars. The local speciality is Salmorejo, a cold soup made of tomatoes, breadcrumbs and garlic, topped with Serrano ham and chopped boiled egg.
