Spinalonga

We made our own breakfast in the apartment, toast and coffee.

Today we're going to Spinalonga, the island that used to be a leper colony. We drove to the village of Plakas and caught the boat that only takes about 20 minutes to get to the island.

The island is small enough to walk round. It was very quiet when we got there but later got busy when the boats from Elounda and Agios Nikolaos arrived. It's very atmospheric seeing all the deserted streets with shops, houses, workshops etc. The battlements are from earlier eras as the island has been used to defend the bay.

After taking the boat back to Plakas we start a walk along coast a bit. However it's extremely warm and would have been a bit of a slog to go on all day without any shade, so we head back after 2 or 3 miles.

We decide to go for a drive in the small roads north of Agios Nikolaos. We stopped at a church in mountains for lunch under a shady tree.

Then we went on to Milatos. We stopped at one point after seeing a couple of large birds soaring above the gorge, I think they're Griffon vultures.

Milatos cave is a large cave with stalagmite columns and with a church inside. Nice and cool.

We then drove down to Milatos beach for a drink.

On the way back we went shopping in Neapolis then to the beach at Agios Nikolaos and had a swim.

Back to apartment for dinner, this time we make our own - omelette with onion, pepper, courgette and sweetcorn.
