London - Day 2

This morning we caught the Underground from Hanger Lane to Bank, then walked down to the Monument to the Great Fire of London.

We went in and walked up the 311 step spiral staircase to the viewing platform.

From there we had a good view to the skyscrapers in the City of London, and to Tower Bridge.

It's amazing how the Lloyds building, which used to be so prominent, is now dwarfed by all the other buildings.

Also the Shard on the south bank of the Thames.

Got a certificate!

After the Monument we walked across London Bridge to Borough Market, where we had our breakfast.

Our original plan was to go to the Tower of London today, but the weather wasn't great and the forecast for tomorrow was better, so we decided to go to the British Museum instead. We caught the Underground to Tottenham Court Road then walked the rest, it was raining a bit.

We had a coffee inside first. The museum is huge, but we quickly walked round the highlights such as the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles and the Isle of Lewis Chess Set.

There was an interesting exhibit that was a piece of art representing all the drugs taken in a lifetime for an average person.

Next we were visiting the Sky Garden, so we caught the Underground again.

We were a bit early so had a pint at the Crosse Keys pub.

Sky Garden is the top floor of the skyscraper 20 Fenchurch Street, also known as the Walkie Talkie building. It's free to visit, though you have to book in advance. It's basically an indoor public park, which also has places where you can eat and drink.

We first caught the lift to the 35th floor. The lift was amazingly smooth.

At the top we just wandered around and took in the views, waiting till it got dark as well.

After this we went for a pizza at Franco Manca near Victoria, it was very good and great value.

After dinner we went for a pint at the Willow Walk pub.

We'd booked seats at the Wicked the Musical at the Apollo Victoria, so went there next. It was a very good show!

(We were there quite early, it did get busy!)

We caught the underground back to Hanger Lane and went back to the hotel.
