We left the campsite in the morning, stopping at a nearby supermarket for some shopping. We had decided to stay on the north coast for a little longer to avoid the worst of the heatwave further south, so we headed for Étretat a bit further west along the Normandy coast.
It's a busy seaside town with no possibility of parking near the centre so we went to the aire on the road out of town. We paid at the machine on entry, it's about £12.50 per night. Some of the pitches have access to electricity included, but ours didn't. We don't really need it though.
We went for a walk into town and towards the coast. It has some nice buildings, and a very busy beach with chalk cliffs at either side. It was very hot and sunny by now.
It's a tradition there that boats are covered with thatch and used as restaurants, there were a few just behind the beach.
There are paths up to the cliffs at either end of the beach, so we decided to try both of them. First we went along to the west and up a busy path with many spectacular viewpoints to the eroded cliff arches and other formations.
Then back down, along behind the beach, then steeply up the east side. There's a church at the top.
We went for a drink at a bar in town, we decided to share a bottle of rosé cider, which was very nice.
We walked back to the aire, and later had quiche for dinner with new potatoes, peas and sweetcorn.
