We left fairly early, and drove to Coniston in the Lake District, arriving before 1pm. We checked in to the Camping and Caravanning Club Temporary Site on the playing field of John Ruskin school.
It's £14 per night, with the only facilities being fresh water and chemical toilet disposal.
Since the weather was reasonable, we decided to take the opportunity to climb up Old Man of Coniston. From the centre of the village we walked up a very steep lane till we got to a car park, then an easy path to the bottom of the hill itself.
Then there was a steep climb, with the views getting better, until we reached some old mine workings.
We carried on steeply up till we got to a tarn called Low Water.
From there we had the final pull to the summit, with great views down.
It was very windy at the top, so we didn't linger. We continued on a circular route beyond the summit, passing another tarn called Goat's Water.
From there it was an easier, but longer, route back to Coniston. We did a total of 14km, with 850 metres of ascent.
We went for a couple of pints at the Black Bull. While there we noticed there was an Indian takeaway just across the road, so for an easy night we ordered one. We had Lamb Pathia and a Chicken Rojan Josh.
We took it back to the van and ate it there, it was very good.
