Liverpool - Day 1

This is Scott's birthday trip, a two day visit to Liverpool.

We caught the 10.30 train from Curriehill to Haymarket, then from there the Virgin west coast train as far as Wigan. As we hadn't had time at Haymarket to buy lunch, we decided to take a break at Wigan, as the trains on to Liverpool were every half hour.

We went to a cafe in the main street and had a snack, Shirley had a cheese toastie and Scott had a beef and onion barm and chips.

We then caught the 2pm train to Liverpool Lime Street, which took about 45 minutes.

From the station we walked through the centre of town to check in to our hotel, the Tune Hotel on Castle Street. We'd booked this for only £34 per night and it was perfectly fine.

After unpacking we went out for a walk, first heading towards the Anglican Cathedral. On the way we passed the elaborate archway at the beginning of Liverpool's Chinatown.

We then carried on to the cathedral. This was very impressive, being the second largest Anglican cathedral in the world.

We had a walk around. Unfortunately we couldn't climb up the tower as that doesn't start till the Easter weekend.

Back outside, we walked round the circumference, through a park with old gravestones in it which was nice.

Deciding it was time for a pint, we consulted the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and headed for the Grapes, which was very near.

We then continued on to the Dispensary, another good pub, where Scott had a pint of Titanic Plum Port which went down very well :-)

We then headed back into the town centre. Our hotel was actually very near the famous Cavern Club, so we had a wander round the area. There are both a Cavern Club and a Cavern Pub, both really catering for the tourist trade. Neither are actually really authentic from the Beatles era, as the real one was originally a few yards down the street but was demolished for the foundations of a shopping centre.

It was interesting though, and they all had live music (of varying standards). We stayed and watched for a bit.

For dinner we went to the Wahaca Mexican restaurant. We had tortilla chips and salsa to start, then Scott had skirt steak burrito and Shirley had a bavette steak with slaw and salsa. It was OK but not great, and the restaurant was very quiet with little atmosphere.

After dinner we walked back to the Cavern Club area and watched a couple more live acts.
